How do I create a Configurable product?

Answer

With some products, you'll want to create an product with options that can be selected by a customer when purchasing ( Sizes or Colors, usually ). This is done by creating a Configurable Product with the following steps. For basic, one-size fits all items, read our Simple Product question.

After logging in, select Catalog and then Manage Products.

In the upper, right corner, select Add Product.

  1. Set the Attribute Set to the desired product type. You may have a few options, detailed below.
    • Note: depending on your type of store, some of these options may not be visible.
    1. Default is the basic set of attributes for a product. This is not the correct choice, our configurable product is specialized and will require a special set of attributes.
    2. Color: Select this option if your product will have a box for a customer to select a different color when buying, and ONLY different colors. If the customer will also select a Size with the color, use the Multi-Size/Multi-Color option.
    3. Multi-Size/Multi-Color: This option is for products where the user will select a color as well as a size, before they purchase.
    4. Multiple Sizes: Select this option for products where ONLY the size will be selectable by the customer.
  2. Select the Product Type of Configurable. Click Next.
  3. Select the attribute that the user will have access to. For instance, if you selected Multi-Size/Multi-Color you will check off both Color and Size, as customers will be select those two features of the product before they purchase.
  4. Under General Tab:
    1. Set the name, description, short description.
    2. Create the SKU. This value must be unique from every other product, and must not include spaces. Please use dashes, instead. This is used by the system to differentiate between each product and will be sent in the Purchase Order. If you have multiple stores, its suggested to add a prefix to each SKU to mark which store it was ordered from. An example: STOREA-tee-shirt
    3. Set the Status to Enabled.
    4. Set the Visibility, types are explained below, however usually Catalog/Search is the best option.
      1. Nowhere - Product is not viewed in the catalog or found. in a search.
      2. Catalog - Product is only viewable in the catalog and is not included when a user searches.
      3. Search - Product is only used during a search and is not viewable in the catalog.
      4. Catalog/Search - Product is viewable in the catalog, as well as indexed for searching.
  5. Under Price Tab
    1. Set the Price. Only numbers are necessary, no dollar signs or similar designations are needed.
    2. Call for Price - If 'Call for Price' is selected, the item will not be eligible to be added to a customer's cart, but will show in the catalog, with 'Call For Price' showing where the price usually shows, along with any other attributes. Any price set will be ignored.
    3. Special Price - This is used for special deals, for instances around the holidays. The system will display the Price box, with the amount crossed out, and display this Special Price (usually lower) instead. This price will remain the amount the item costs indefinitely, unless Special Price from and To dates are set.
  6. Under Websites
    • If you have multiple stores, check which website the product is to be included in.
  7. Under Categories
    • Check the categories you would like the product to show in. It may show in multiple categories.
  8. Select Save & Continute Edit in the upper right hand corner. This will save your work, yet keep the screen open to continue creating the product. This step must be done to proceed.
  9. To add images, please see the How do I add an image? question.

Adding sizes or colors

Next we will create the individual products the customer will be buying. (I.E. The separate sizes or colors they will be ordering, or combination of the two) If you have closed the item you were creating, please reopen, or search for, and open the Configurable product you would like to add items to.

  1. Under Associated Products, locate the Quick simple product creation section. If you do not see this section, most likely you skipped Step 8 above.
  2. Select the Status to Enabled
  3. Select the Visibility to Nowhere.
  4. Select the Attribute (Size or Color usually)
  5. Set the quantity to at least 1
  6. Set Availability to In Stock.
  7. Repeat the Steps 2 through 6 for each attribute or attribute combination.
